The Draa — Straw Tote with Wide Caramel Leather Straps

The Draa Valley is the palm oasis of southern Morocco, where date palms grow in long green groves. This basket is named for it: palm leaf, woven by hand in Marrakech, kept simple.

The only decoration is the leather. Two wide, smooth caramel straps run down the outside of the basket from rim to base, stitched along the edges, and rise above the rim as handles you can carry by hand or on the shoulder. An adjustable leather buckle strap at the rim adds the one detail.

It’s open-top and unlined, so it airs out after a wet swimsuit. Choose your size: Small for a day bag, Medium for the beach or market, Large for towels for two.

Each Draa is woven and finished by hand, so weave, size, and leather tone vary slightly from bag to bag. That’s part of its character.

Care: Wipe the leather with a slightly damp cloth, and condition it occasionally with a colorless balm. Keep the straw dry, and air-dry away from heat if it gets wet. New palm straw may shed a few fibers for the first few weeks. For seven colors, see the Marjana.
