The Hizam — Straw Basket Tote with Leather Buckle Strap

Hizam is the Arabic word for belt, and the wide leather buckle strap on the front is the detail that gives this basket its name.

It’s woven by hand from palm leaf in Marrakech, in a tight herringbone. Two long leather straps are sewn to the rim with cross-stitched leather patches, with no rivets or hardware on the straps. The soft suede-finish straps sit gently on the shoulder, and the smooth leather buckle tab with its silver-tone buckle adds one clean detail on an otherwise plain basket.

It’s open-top and unlined, in the traditional way, so it airs out after a wet swimsuit. It’s made for light-to-medium loads: a market shop, a beach towel, a book. The straps are narrow, so for heavy hauls look at the Marjana, where the straps run the full height of the basket.

Each Hizam is woven and finished by hand, so weave, size and leather tone vary slightly from bag to bag. That’s part of its character.

Care: Keep the suede-finish straps dry and treat them with a suede protector spray before first use. If the bag gets wet, blot gently and air-dry away from heat. Condition the smooth buckle tab occasionally with a colourless balm. New palm straw may shed a few fibres for the first few weeks.
