Somewhere in a Marrakech workshop, a hide was laid flat on a wooden bench and studied before a single cut was made. Where the chocolate brown broke into cream. Where the grain shifted direction. Then the pattern was placed by hand, so the markings would land across the body of the bag exactly where they'd catch the light.

That is why this duffle looks the way it does — and why yours will never look quite like the one in this photograph.

Run your palm across it and you'll feel the difference immediately. Not the flat, uniform coolness of finished leather, but a short, dense nap that lies one way and resists the other, warm under your hand. The brown trim, handles and riveted straps are smooth full-grain by contrast, cut and stitched to frame the hide rather than compete with it. The silver-tone hardware is deliberately quiet.

At 50 cm it swallows a long weekend — two changes of clothes, a pair of shoes, a wash bag — and holds its barrel shape whether it's full or nearly empty. Set it on a hotel luggage rack, in the boot of a car, or on the floor of a hallway between trips, and it reads as an object rather than as luggage.

Leather like this doesn't stay new. The trim will darken at the handles first, where your hand goes. The hair will settle and soften. Five years from now it will be visibly, unmistakably yours — which is the entire point of buying something a person made instead of something a machine stamped out.

Each hide is cut once. When this one is gone, the pattern is gone with it.

• One of a kind: Every hide carries its own markings. Color placement, pattern, and proportion of brown to white will differ from the images shown — this is the nature of natural hide, not a defect.
• Care: Brush gently with a soft-bristled brush in the direction of the hair. Spot clean with a barely damp cloth and air dry away from direct heat. Never soak, machine wash or dry clean. Condition the smooth leather trim once or twice a year with a neutral leather balm.
