The Tangier Duffle — Black Leather Flap-Top Weekender

There was a period — roughly between the steamer trunk and the wheeled suitcase — when a travel bag was expected to do two things: survive the journey, and look better for having made it. This bag is from that school. Not as a costume, but as a set of decisions.

Decision one: the flap. Most duffles stop at a zip. This one closes the zip, then lays a full leather flap over it, secured with a buckle. It keeps rain off the zip track, keeps opportunistic hands out in a crowded station, and gives the bag the profile of an old mail satchel scaled up for travel. Undo the buckle once and it's a two-second open thereafter — the strap holes are just guides; the tongue slips in and out without rethreading.

Decision two: pockets on the outside. A zip pocket on each end of the bag, exactly where your hand goes when someone asks for a passport, a boarding pass, a phone, keys, the small things that shouldn't require opening thirty litres of luggage in a queue. It's the single most-requested feature in travel bags and the one most leather duffles skip because it costs two extra panels and two extra zips. We spent the panels.

Decision three: a lining you'd want to touch. Inside is a soft suede-finish interior in warm taupe — not slick black nylon — with a zip pocket for anything that shouldn't wander.

The rest is what you'd hope: rolled leather handles, riveted straps, antique brass hardware, and a detachable, fully adjustable shoulder strap for the days when 45 litres belongs on a shoulder rather than in a fist. At 50 × 30 × 30 cm it carries three to four days without argument, and it's soft-sided enough to give at the margins.

Handmade in our Marrakech workshop — a city that has been outfitting travellers for about a thousand years and has strong opinions on the subject. The leather will scuff, darken at the handles, and generally get on with the business of becoming yours. Small variations between bags are the signature of the hands that made them.
