The Atlas Weekender — Brindle Cowhide Duffle Bag

There is no pattern on this bag. No spots, no contrast, no graphic. Just a hide that shifts from pale caramel at one end to something close to burnt espresso at the other, the way the light moves across a hillside in the late afternoon.

That gradient wasn't printed or dyed. It's where the animal's coat changed, and a cutter in our Marrakech workshop chose to run it lengthways across the body of the bag rather than cropping it out. It takes longer. It wastes more hide. It's also the only reason this bag looks like anything.

Draw your hand along it and the nap gives one way, resists the other — dense, short, warm rather than cool. The espresso leather trim is smooth by comparison, and the two textures against each other are the whole design. Nothing else is asked to do any work.

The details you'll actually use:

Two zip pulls, so you can open it from either end without walking round the bed. A leather-capped zip end that stops the slider running off the track — a small thing that only matters the first time a cheap bag fails you. Riveted strap keepers with contrast stitching. A detachable shoulder strap on swivel clips, because the difference between carrying 36 litres in your hand and carrying it across your back is roughly one flight of airport stairs.

Inside, a clean black lining and a zip pocket for the things you'd otherwise spend ten minutes digging for.

At 50 cm this is a two-to-three night bag. Suit, shoes, wash bag, a book. It holds its barrel shape empty, which means it sits properly on a luggage rack instead of collapsing into itself like nylon does.

The trim will darken where your hand goes. The hair will settle. In five years it will look better than it does today, which is not something you can say about most things you can buy in an afternoon.

One hide, one bag. When this one goes, the gradient goes with it.

• Care: Brush gently with a soft-bristled brush following the direction of the hair. Spot clean with a barely damp cloth, air dry away from direct heat. Never soak, machine wash or dry clean. Condition the smooth trim with a neutral leather balm once or twice a year.
