The Merzouga — Natural Fringe Straw Basket Bag

At the edge of the Sahara, near the village of Merzouga, the dunes turn gold at sunset. This basket is that color: pale raffia fringe, falling in layers over a handwoven palm body.

It’s woven by hand in Marrakech from palm leaf, then covered by hand in rows of natural raffia fringe, with only the rim, the base and the cord-wrapped handles left plain. It moves when you walk, and every one is a little different.

Carry it by the two short handles as a statement bag, or keep it at home as a blanket basket or a cover for a plant pot, with a plastic liner for any plant.

It’s a shaggy, sculptural piece, so treat it that way. The fringe can tangle, catch on knits and shed a few fibers, and the basket is open-top and unlined. It’s made for dry days and light loads, not wet sand.

Each Merzouga is made by hand, so the fringe falls differently on every basket. That’s part of its character.

Care: Keep it dry, and away from rain, sand and salt water. Comb the fringe gently with your fingers, and shake it out rather than brushing hard. If it gets damp, air-dry it with the fringe hanging free. Store it upright so the fringe isn’t crushed. New fringe may shed a few fibers at first.
