The Essaouira Weekender — Brown & White Cowhide Bag

Hold it up to the light and the white isn't white. It's cream at the flank, closer to ivory across the base, and where it meets the brown it doesn't stop cleanly — it feathers, hair by hair, into a soft brindled edge that no printer has ever managed to fake convincingly.

That edge is how you tell real hide from cow print at ten paces. It's also why we don't print anything.

This is the warmer of our two spotted weekenders. Where the other runs dark brown and silver, this one is tan leather and antique brass — a honeyed, sunlit palette that sits closer to the leather souks it came from than to a ranch in Texas. The brass has a brushed finish rather than a polish, so it catches light without flashing it.

The shape is doing something specific. It isn't a barrel. It's cut wider at the mouth and tapered slightly toward a flat, structured base, which means two things: it stands up on its own instead of rolling, and when you unzip it the whole opening yawns wide rather than pursing shut. You can see what you packed. You can reach the bottom without excavating.

Inside, natural cotton canvas rather than synthetic lining. It breathes, it doesn't cling to fabric, and it doesn't have the plastic smell that a nylon-lined bag carries for its first month. There's a zip pocket along one wall for the passport-and-charger category of thing.

The tan handles are rolled and set on brass D-rings. The detachable shoulder strap runs on swivel clips and adjusts, so the bag works over a shoulder through an airport or in your hand across a hotel lobby.

On living with a pale hide, honestly: the cream will pick up marks, particularly along the base. A soft brush handles most of it in seconds, and a leather protector spray before its first trip makes an enormous difference. If you want a bag that never shows a day's use, buy the black one. This one is going to look like it's been somewhere, and that's rather the point.

Every hide is read and cut by hand in our Marrakech workshop. The spots on the bag that arrives will not be these spots. That's not a caveat — it's the entire product.

• One of a kind: Every hide differs in spot pattern, placement and the ratio of brown to white. The bag you receive will not match these photographs. This is the nature of natural hide, not a defect.
• Care: Brush gently with a soft-bristled brush in the direction of the hair. Spot clean with a barely damp cloth and air dry away from direct heat. Never soak, machine wash or dry clean. Treat the smooth tan leather with a neutral balm once or twice a year. Because of the pale hide, we recommend a leather protector spray before first use and setting the bag on a surface rather than the floor where you can.
