The Habiba — Blush Straw Tote with Leather Straps

Habiba is what Moroccans call someone they love: beloved, darling. This basket is for her.

It’s woven by hand from palm leaf in Marrakech, in a tight herringbone, and finished with soft blush leather. Two wide straps run down the outside of the basket from rim to base, are stitched in place, and pass under the bottom, so the weight of what you carry goes into the leather and not just the weave. Where the rolled handles meet the straps, a pointed, hand-stitched leather patch finishes the join.

Carry it by hand or on the forearm to the beach, a market, a bridal shower, or a honeymoon. It’s open-top and unlined, in the traditional way.

Each Habiba is woven and finished by hand, so weave, size and leather tone vary slightly from bag to bag. That’s part of its character.

Care: Pale leather darkens and marks with use, and can pick up dye from dark denim. Treat it with a colorless protector before first use, wipe it with a slightly damp cloth, and condition it occasionally with a colorless balm. Keep the straw dry and air-dry it away from heat if it gets wet. New palm straw may shed a few fibers for the first few weeks.
