The Majorelle Weekender — Cobalt Blue Leather Duffle Bag

In 1937, a French painter named Jacques Majorelle stood in his garden in Marrakech and coated the walls of his studio in a blue so saturated it barely seemed possible in daylight — a cobalt-ultramarine he'd distilled from the blues he saw around him: workshop doorways, Berber burnouses, the tiles of the medina. The colour now carries his name. The garden gets nearly a million visitors a year, most of whom leave trying to figure out how to take the blue home.

Our workshop is in Marrakech — the same city, a few kilometres from the garden — and this duffle is dyed as close to that blue as leather allows. Which is the point worth pausing on: on leather, this colour behaves differently than on a wall. The pebbled grain catches light unevenly, so the blue shifts as the bag moves — deeper in the creases, brighter on the curve of the barrel. It reads as material, not paint. Every airport carousel in the world is a river of black and grey; this is the bag you identify from thirty metres.

The hardware is deliberately cold: gunmetal grey, not gold. Warm brass against this blue would tip it decorative. Gunmetal keeps it modern — closer to a fashion house's colour exercise than to a souvenir.

Otherwise it's built exactly like our black and brown weekenders, which is to say properly: rolled leather handles, riveted straps, dual zip pulls on leather tabs, and a detachable, adjustable shoulder strap on swivel clips. Lined inside. At 50 × 27 × 27 cm it's the classic 36-litre, two-to-three night size, soft enough to compress into an overhead locker.

Handmade in Marrakech, from the city that owns this colour. Grain and depth of dye vary slightly from bag to bag — hand work, honestly disclosed. And a practical note for buyers of saturated leather: colour on screens varies more than colour on hides.
