The Najma — Fringe Straw Basket Bag with Gold Sequins

Najma is the Arabic word for a star. Hold this basket in the light and you’ll see why: four bands of gold-tone sequins glint along the body, under a skirt of raffia fringe that moves when you do.

It’s woven by hand from palm leaf in Marrakech, then dressed by hand: sequin trim stitched around the body, a raffia fringe attached at the top, and a rim wrapped in black yarn. Two short cord-wrapped handles carry it in the hand or the crook of your arm.

It’s a statement bag, made for festivals, resort evenings and city days. Treat it like the party piece it is: it’s better for the walk to the beach than for the sand itself, and it’s happiest kept dry.

Each Najma is made and decorated by hand, so the fringe and the sequin bands vary slightly from bag to bag. That’s part of its character.

Care: Keep it dry, and away from rain, sand, and salt water. If it gets damp, air-dry it with the fringe hanging free. Comb the fringe gently with your fingers. Avoid rubbing the sequins against rough fabric, and store the bag upright without crushing the fringe.
