Knotted by hand in the Atlas Mountains

Each Beni Ourain rug is knotted by hand from undyed sheep's wool. Khadija has been working this way for thirty-two years, on a loom her father taught her to use. The wool is washed in cold mountain water and left its natural colour, which is why no two whites are quite the same white.

What makes a real Berber rug

These aren't woven to a pattern book. The diamonds and lines are drawn from memory and improvised as the work goes, so a rug drifts a little off-square and the motifs don't repeat exactly. That's the point of a hand-knotted Moroccan rug, and the reason a machine copy never quite looks right.

How to care for a Beni Ourain rug

Expect a dense, high pile that flattens under furniture and springs back. Vacuum gently, shake it out in the sun, and it will outlast the room you bought it for.

Rugs: questions we are asked

What is a Beni Ourain rug?

A Beni Ourain rug is a hand-knotted Berber rug from the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, traditionally made from undyed sheep's wool with a thick, high pile and simple diamond or line motifs.

Why is my rug not perfectly square?

Our rugs are knotted by hand and the pattern is improvised from memory as the work goes, so a rug can drift slightly off-square and motifs don't repeat exactly. That is the sign of a hand-knotted rug, not a defect.

How do I clean a Beni Ourain rug?

Vacuum gently and shake it out in the sun. The dense wool pile flattens under furniture and springs back over time.
