The Sahara Weekender — Tan Cognac Leather Duffle Bag

Buy a black bag, and it will look the same in ten years. Buy this one and it won't look the same in ten months. Tan is the only leather colour that visibly keeps a record. It starts here — a warm cognac, light enough that you can see the grain move through it — and it goes somewhere darker and more complex with every trip. Sunlight deepens it. The oils in your hands deepen it faster, so the handles darken first and the panels follow. Two years in, it's amber. Five years in it's a colour that doesn't have a name, and it's entirely specific to where you took it. That's the whole argument for tan, and it's a good one. But it comes with a fair warning: it marks, and it marks early. A pale hide shows the first scuff more honestly than a dark one. If that would bother you, our dark brown Fez is the better bag. If you understand that the marks are the point — that a bag with no history is a bag that hasn't been anywhere — then this is yours.

What the workshop did well here: 

Brass feet on the base. Four of them, set into the panel corners. This is the detail almost nobody includes at this price and everybody wishes they had: the bag sits on studs rather than on leather, so hotel floors, car boots and airport tiles wear on brass instead of on the underside of your hide. It's the difference between a base that greys in a season and one that doesn't.

Cross-stitched handle anchors. Look closely where each handle meets the body — an X stitched inside a box. That's saddlery reinforcement, and it's the joint that fails first on a loaded duffle. Stitched, not just riveted.

Three exterior pockets. A zip pocket framed across the front panel, and an open slip pocket on each end. The zip pocket is for the passport-and-boarding-pass category; the side slips are for the things you want in and out in one motion — a paperback, a folded jacket, sunglasses. They're open-top by design, which makes them fast rather than secure; keep the valuables in the zip. 

Dual zip pulls on leather tabs, antique brass hardware throughout, rolled leather handles, and a detachable, adjustable shoulder strap on swivel clips. Lined inside. At 50 × 27 × 27 cm, it's the classic 36-litre two-to-three night size.

Handmade in our Marrakech workshop. Hand-finished tan varies from hide to hide more than any dark colour does — yours will be its own shade before it's even left Morocco.

• Natural variation: Tan leather varies noticeably between hides in tone and grain, and darkens with use — expect your bag to differ from these photographs and to keep changing.

• Care: Wipe with a dry or barely damp cloth. Condition with a colourless neutral balm every 3–6 months — tinted products stain pale leather. A protector spray before first use is genuinely worth it on tan. Air dry away from heat if wet. Never machine wash or dry clean. Most scuffs will darken into the patina on their own within weeks.
