Meet the makersDescription
Somewhere between Marrakech and the Atlas foothills, women have been splitting doum palm leaves and weaving them into baskets for as long as anyone has bothered to record it. The palm grows wild. The leaves are cut, dried in the sun until they turn the colour of pale straw, split into ribbons, and worked by hand into a weave that has no pattern book — it lives in the hands that make it.This one has a cactus on the front. It's crocheted separately in bright green wool, stitched on by hand, and given a handful of black embroidered spines that fan out across the weave like the plant is growing straight out of the basket. It's a small, deliberate piece of whimsy on an object that has been serious for a thousand years, and it's completely charming.Hold it and the first thing you notice is the sound — that dry, papery rustle a real palm basket makes and a synthetic one never does. The second is the weight, or rather the lack of it. The third is the handles: proper cognac leather, thick and softly grained, fixed through the weave with cross-stitches you can see from the outside. Not plastic, not cord. They'll darken with handling the way leather does.
On size, plainly: this is the small one. 20 × 24 cm — phone, purse, sunglasses, keys, a small bottle of water, a paperback if you're determined. It's a market-morning bag, a beach-afternoon bag, a first-proper-bag for a child. It is not a shopping basket and won't pretend to be.It's open at the top and unlined, which is how these baskets have always been made — you can see what's in it, and it airs out after a wet swimsuit rather than staying damp.Every one is woven by hand, so the density of the weave, the exact height, and the cactus's precise proportions shift from basket to basket. Yours will be its own.
Features & Specifications

- Detail: Hand-crocheted green wool cactus appliqué with black embroidered spines
- Handles: Leather, attached through the weave with visible cross-stitching

- One of a kind: Weave density, exact dimensions and cactus proportions vary between baskets. Small irregularities are the signature of hand-weaving, not defects.
- Care: Keep dry where you can; palm straw is naturally water-resistant but not waterproof. If it gets wet, let it air dry naturally, away from direct heat. Dust with a dry brush or a hairdryer on cold. Store loosely stuffed with tissue to hold its shape rather than flattened under other things. Spot clean the leather handles with a barely damp cloth and a little neutral balm once a year.
- A natural material note: Palm straw can loosen slightly with heavy use and may shed the occasional fibre when new. This settles within the first few weeks.
