The Shams — Open-Weave Raffia Backpack

Shams is the Arabic word for the sun, and this bag is the color of it: warm natural raffia, with zips, tassels, and braided straps.

It’s woven by hand in Marrakech in a coiled and open-weave pattern that lets air through and catches the light. A zip runs around the arched top; there’s a zip pocket on the front, and braided raffia straps carry it on your back. A braided loop at the top lets you hang it on a hook or carry it by hand.

It’s made for light days: a festival, the beach, a market, a city walk. The weave is open, so what’s inside can be seen. Pack the things you don’t mind showing, like sunglasses, a scarf or a book.

Each Shams is handwoven, so the weave and the orange details vary slightly from bag to bag. That’s part of its character.

Care: Keep it dry and out of direct sun for long hours. If it gets damp, air-dry it flat away from heat. Store it stuffed with tissue to hold its shape.
